Privacy
Short version: we collect your email and whatever you choose to tell us about your situation. We do not sell it. If you tell us you are ready for a conversation, we share it with the operators who have that conversation. You can leave in one click.
What we collect
- Your email address, and your first name if you give it.
- Which page you subscribed from, and the question you arrived with.
- Your answers to our questionnaire, if you complete it. Those are self-reported bands and categories, not documents or account numbers.
- Ordinary web request data such as referring page and general location, through our hosting and analytics.
What we never ask for
Social Security numbers, account numbers, statements, tax returns, passwords, or anything that would let someone move your money. No page on this site will ever ask for those. If something claiming to be us does, it is not us.
Who we share it with
Service providers that make the site work: our host, our database provider, and our email sending provider. They process data on our behalf and are not allowed to use it for their own purposes.
And, in one specific case, real estate operators. If you complete the questionnaire and tell us you have a meaningful amount of capital and a real timeline, we pass your name, email, and the substance of what you told us to operators who buy and manage property and who can have a useful conversation with you. That is the only situation in which your information goes to anyone outside our own vendors, it happens only because you volunteered it, and it is disclosed on our about page and in our disclosures.
We do not sell your information, and we do not rent lists.
Subscribing gets you the weekly letter. Every letter has a working unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing takes effect immediately and permanently. You can also write to desk@theselfdirected.com and ask us to remove you, and we will.
Your choices
Ask us what we hold about you and we will tell you. Ask us to delete it and we will, except where we have to keep a record of a prior communication. One email to desk@theselfdirected.com is enough for either.
Children
This site is for adults making decisions about retirement accounts. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that matters, we will change the date above and say what changed.
